Nguoi Viet Newspaper and Its New Saga

Another controversy at Nguoi-Viet Daily  has been keeping Phan Huy Dat, CEO and Publisher, very busy writing mea-culpa to the anti-communist activists in Little Saigon, Orange County.

Apparently, in an op-ed piece sent by a reader was published last Sunday.  The piece denigraded the overseas community as coward and the ex-military people are nothing but defeated soldiers with no purposes.  What made the matter worse is that the writing went on to glorify the communist regime and their victory over the South Vietnam government.

Of course, with a history of stirring the hornet's nest,  Nguoi-Viet has been receiving a deluge of negative responses from the Internet.

The mistake was to have the op-ed piece to be published.  The person responsible for the weekend publication was Vu Qui Hao Nhien.    Of course, his position as assisstance editor-in-chief was terminated.

As readers recalled,  Vu Qui Hao Nhien was first to let go after the foot-path pan incidence 4 years ago.  He was responsible for allowing the picture to be published.  Vu then started the blog Bolsavik while teaching math at a local community college.  He was however hired back to Nguoi-Viet about 2 years ago.

Just a bit of background to appreciate the irony of Nguoi-Viet's latest controversy -

After surviving a turbulence period that saw the release of the infamous pictures of the principal founder,  Do ngoc Yen, meeting with the many high level communist officials in 1998 and the foot-bath pan controversy, Nguoi-Viet  has been trying very hard to stay on the right side of the anti-communist extremists for the last 3 years.  However, its reputation was tarnished and they went through an internal purge.

The newspaper has ever since sees its revenue declined steadily and recently asked its employees to take another 10% paycut. The decline is partly due to the poor economy but also the result of stiff competition by the proliferation of TV networks and radio shows in Little Saigon in the last 2 years.

Obama Look-alike

Nguyen Duc Van, a buddhist monk living in Vietnam, has a look that people would mistaken him for the President of the US, Barrack Obama.   The secret service probably would love to have him on their team to serve as a double for the President.

Ly Tong Out of the Hospital, Receives 6 Month Jail Time

Ly Tong sat with much emotion in the court room today and he looked gaunt and pale from losing 33 lbs during his hunger strike.   He was released from the hospital on Thursday after passing out due to starvation.   The doctor gave him IV infusion and kept him in the hospital for 4 days.

The courtroom was packed with his supporters and there were about 120 people showing their support outside the building.

Despite the fact that both prosecutors and Probation Department suggested Ly to have minimal jail time, Judge Andrea Bryan decided to give Ly six month jail time.   Part of her reason was that he did not show any remorse and even worse seemed to mock the justice system.

Prominent local politicians such as Kansen Chu and Dave Cortese wrote letters to the judge asking for leniency.

Ly Tong will spend 54 days in jail in addition to the 26 days already served.  He will also have 3 years probation

What next for him?  He is insisting that the justice system did not treat him fairly and that he is asking his lawyer to appeal.   And whether he will continue his hunger strike, nobody knows.

We all can assure that we have not heard the end of Ly Tong yet.
